Welcome to Anne's Autism Speaks Dopey Challenge Fundraiser!!!
28 Dec update
Holy crap. A week from now, the Dopey Challenge starts, and I have to admit I am soooooooooooooooooooooo not ready for this! I was really hoping that this year I'd be injury/illness free, but once again, that hasn't panned out and the Challenge will be even more challenging. Sometimes it really sucks getting old. But even though I am ill-prepared for a lovely 48.6 miles through the Disney parks, I am not backing down. One, because I'm doing this for a cause, and that cause's name is Lydia (happy belated birthday, sweet girl!) and two, because her father Bill already booked tickets to fly down as my athletic supporter. Can't leave my bassinette buddy/thunder buddy hangin'. With this lovely arctic weather pattern hovering over the country, the latest forecast looks like it's going to be a cold four days of races--reminds me of my first Disney marathon where the starting temp was about 26 degrees. Yeah. That was fun....not. I know my last entry asked for some cooler weather to be shipped down my way, but this is kinda ridiculous.
So over the next 6 days, my freak out level will be increasing, and I will be doing everything I can to make sure my back and my knee are in the best possible shape to get me through this insanity I've actually paid to participate in. I will be posting my progress, even if I should fail, though I'm crossing my fingers that my stubborness and sheer will can get me over the finish line four times. Ugh. Just thinking about that makes me queasy.
Anywho, please donate to this worthwhile cause if you can! I hope everyone is looking forward to the new year--I know I'm looking forward to 7 Jan around 1 PM which hopefully will see me with a marathon medal around my neck, an ice bag on my knee and a glass of champagne in my hand.
17 Oct update
So I've been walking and working out with my AWESOME personal trainer (who I only want to maim or throw a weight at three, maybe four times a session) to try to strengthen my knee as there are only about 11 weeks to go before I do this Dopey thing again. This weekend will be a big test as I do the Running For the Bay half marathon in Apalachicola FL. Luckily, it's in conjunction with a 5K, 10K, full and ultra marathon, so the course is open for-ev-er, and as I'm planning on just walking the 13.1, I won't have to push too hard. Especially as two weeks later I'll be at Disney for the Wine & Dine 10K and half. Oy. Thinking of why I'm doing this (read below) and remembering the wise words given to me before my first run (right foot, left foot, repeat) keeps me moving forward. Though if some of you northerners would shoot some cooler weather down my way, I'd really appreciate it. 80 degrees and 90% humidity at 0600 is just wrong for October.
And thanks for any and all encouragement and donations!
Two years ago I completed the Dopey Challenge at Walt Disney World--5K, 10K, half marathon and full marathon over 4 days--and upon finishing I fervently declared "Never again!" Well, apparently I lied to myself as I caved and signed up to do it yet again in January 2018. The last Challenge found me recovering from bronchitis, making the four days of running/walking even more taxing, but I finished, thanks to my inspiration--Ms Lydia Broadbridge, one of the sweetest and most thoughtful young women I know, tough and resilient through all her challenges which make mine seem so insignificant. Her dad Bill (my bassinette buddy!) made the trip down to FL to be my athletic supporter in 2016 and is doing the same in 2018, so I'm once again dedicating this endeavor (endeavour for my British friends) to Lydia and her family who live with Autism every minute of every day.
I will be updating this page during the next couple of months as I train and rehab a sprained knee. It wouldn't be a Dopey Challenge for me if I didn't have an extra trial to add to 48.6 miles of running around the Disney Parks, but that won't stop me from trying!
Please consider supporting me with a donation to Autism Speaks--every penny makes a difference!!!!
