Join me in my efforts to support Autism Speaks!
Autism Speaks is dedicated to promoting solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the lifespan, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families through advocacy and support; increasing understanding and acceptance of autism spectrum disorder; and advancing research into causes and better interventions for autism spectrum disorder and related conditions. They empower people with autism and their families with resources, online tools and information covering the life span.
Autism, or autism spectrum disorder (ASD), refers to a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates 1 in 59 children is on the autism spectrum. Because ASD has impacted my family, I have chosen to run for Autism Speaks in the Walt Disney Half Marathon in January 2020.
My cousin Lindsay was always told to stop worrying and to stop reading online articles because her child is just a “normal” kid. However, her concern soon turned into reality when my cousin, Gabriel, was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder when he was three years-old.
Everyone’s experience with ASD is different. Sometimes the effects are similar to other disorders (like ADHD or OCD) and that is one reason why it can be so hard to diagnose. With more research being done by organizations like Autism Speaks, it is becoming easier to detect Autism Spectrum Disorders earlier. For Gabriel, he gets sensory overload and can be hyperactive. Sometimes the sensory overload gets to a point where my cousin Lindsay “wishes she could mute the world,” for him.
“To try and describe Gabriel to anyone is nearly impossible. His uniqueness, creativity, pure athleticism, photographic memory, attention to detail, almost supersonic hearing, compassion, sensitivity and charm are all things that continue to amaze us, family, friends, teachers and therapists.”
Gabriel has grown up to be an incredibly smart and compassionate little man. He found a love for animals and knows so much about them, that it would blow you away. His imagination and ability to think about things much greater than him is astounding and his wisdom and faith makes him seem so much older than six years-old. “Autism doesn't define Gabriel, it just adds another unique layer to this already unique child.”
By donating to Autism Speaks, you are helping in the development of various resources for people to continually learn about Autism Spectrum Disorder. Please consider making a donation as any amount is greatly appreciated! You can support not only me, but an organization that supports children and families through what can be an extremely confusing moment in life.
Thank you for helping me reach my goal. Your support is greatly appreciated!
