Morrissey runs the NYC Marathon for Autism Speaks!
Over the years I've found my running legs- from high school track to half marathons to completing my first full marathon last year. And this has all been (crazily enough) for fun. Yes, for many of these races my registration fee went to good causes and organizations; however, I would like to channel my energy not only into the physical race itself but into raising awareness of a cause/ organization that I deeply value. I'm ready to find my fundraising legs!
During my time as a special education teacher, as a mentor, as a family member- as a human I have encountered, respected and loved individuals who are on the Autism spectrum, as I'm sure you have. Autism poses many challenges to individuals and families who face it; however, it also poses amazing strengths and opportunities for those affected by it. One organization that truly encompasses and realizes these strengths and challenge is Autism Speaks.
Autism Speaks is dedicated to promoting solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the lifespan, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families through advocacy and support; increasing understanding and acceptance of autism spectrum disorder; and advancing research into causes and better interventions for autism spectrum disorder and related conditions. They empower people with autism and their families with resources, online tools and information covering the life span. The CDC estimates 1 in 59 children is on the autism spectrum- and these individuals deserve attention and understanding.
Autism Speaks has earned my support and hopefully you'll consider supporting them as well. Please donate what you can to my fundraiser and give me the needed motivation to complete the 26.2 come November!
