Join me in my efforts to support Autism Speaks!
I am running the NY Marathon, not because I want to run a marathon. I am running the NY Martathon to raise funds and awareness to support a cause that is extremely important to me. My son Alexander, who just turned 10 years old, has Autism . He is an amazing child and person. He is extremely funny and extremely smart, one thing he is not is extremely sociable (although will talk endlessly about Minecraft and Rollercoasters, whether you are listening or not). He was diagnosed at 3 while he was still non verbal, my wife taught him a few words through sign language and by the age of 5 we heard his beautiful voice. We luckily live in a great town that has amazing teachers, paraprofessionals, case workers and therapists and a wonderful Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) program at our local public school - Shout out to Public education and Wallace Elementary! Each day he continues to thrive as he works countless hours on Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Speech Therapy and others. We have been so happy with his progress but as a dad who loves him more than anything I fear everyday on how he will adapt to the social world and fear for him when he leaves school and the community that knows and loves him for who he is. Sometimes he has outbursts at school, and his classmates and teachers understands them and doesnt judge him, however that will not always be the case. My goal is to spread knowledge around what Autism is and how it effects behavior so that when he does enter high school and the real world, people are more likely to have an understanding and compassion for what he may be going through. Autism Speaks is on the forefront of this. And this is why I NEED YOUR HELP. Please consider giving whatever you can, no donation is to low or to big. And please share my story with your friends, family and neighbors. Let's spread awareness for my son Alexander and for so many other sons and daughters.
Autism, or autism spectrum disorder, refers to a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates 1 in 59 children is on the autism spectrum.
Autism Speaks is dedicated to promoting solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the lifespan, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families through advocacy and support; increasing understanding and acceptance of autism spectrum disorder; and advancing research into causes and better interventions for autism spectrum disorder and related conditions. They empower people with autism and their families with resources, online tools and information covering the life span.
Autism Speaks enhances lives today and is accelerating a spectrum of solutions for tomorrow.
Thank you for helping me reach my goal. Your support is greatly appreciated!
