Adam's 2020 NYC Marathon Fundraiser for Autism Speaks!
Join me in my efforts to support Autism Speaks!
I am raising funds to support a cause that is important to me while accomplishing my personal goal of running the 2020 NYC Marathon!
Autism, or autism spectrum disorder, refers to a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates 1 in 59 children is on the autism spectrum.
When I was in high school I spent 2 of my summers working for Rockford Park Districts day camps for teenagers with disabilities. Our campers had a wide range of disorders and disabilities - many were on the autism spectrum. I learned a lot over those two summers and even considered going into special education. One of my favorite campers who has on the spectrum - I'll call her Jenny - drew the most wonderful pictures during our free time. She was non-verbal, but through her art communicated so much about her thoughts and feelings. Jenny lived in a group home and had very little opportunities. Our camp was one of the highlight of her summers. Kids, teens, and adults like Jenny deserve understood and loved and offered the same opportunities as those of us not on the spectrum. Autism Speaks helps people like Jenny have better life and that's why I am running for them.
Autism Speaks is dedicated to promoting solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the lifespan, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families through advocacy and support; increasing understanding and acceptance of autism spectrum disorder; and advancing research into causes and better interventions for autism spectrum disorder and related conditions. They empower people with autism and their families with resources, online tools and information covering the life span.
Autism Speaks enhances lives today and is accelerating a spectrum of solutions for tomorrow.
Thank you for helping me reach my goal. Your support is greatly appreciated!
