Ava was diagnosed with High Functioning Autism Spectrum Disorder with ADHD in January 2020. Her personality and overall zest for life is not hindered by her diagnosis. She is her own unique person with her own unique differences. We noticed her quirky habits since she was very little, but thought "This is our Ava, an interesting little kiddo." When she started public school, the very same "quirks" we adapted to were causing her unnecessary stress at school. No child should appear stressed out by school at such a young age. After speaking in depth with the teacher and faculty, we put a game plan in place to have her evaluated. In the mean time, the school provided modifications to help her during any "episodes". Immediately there was an improvement with Ava at school. She is excelling in areas she previously struggled with. She is progressing with her fine motor skills. She has started to eat foods with different colors and textures! We are absolutely grateful for her school's support, especially her teacher. They have made this process easier by their help and patience. After reading what Autism Speaks! provided in their parental handouts, we have seen additional positive improvements from implementing suggested modifications and accomodations at home, as well as school.
Please help us support Ava's journey, as well as all people who are navigating life with Autism Spectrum Disorder! Join Team Boogie for the Autism Speaks! 5K Walk on April 18th in Plano, TX! :)
