Why I Walk for Autism Speaks
For 45 years, I have had the great privilege of being Tom Roman's little sister. He is, hands down, the coolest guy in the universe! For those of you who have the honor of knowing him personally, you understand the great joy brought on by one of Tom’s killer smiles, funny “squeaks,” piano serenades, or (my personal favorite) one of his unexpected hugs. The guy knows how to light up a room and work a crowd, that’s for sure!
On the flip side, it is very frustrating not to have all the answers when it comes to Tom’s Autism – the puzzle piece logo truly is the perfect symbol. It is remarkable how awareness has changed over the last four decades. I wish I had a dollar for every time I had to explain that my brother is autistic, not ARTistic while I was growing up. Now it seems that everyone knows someone affected by autism. While it’s nice to not have so much explaining to do, it’s also scary to think how prevalent autism has become and how much we still have to learn.
It is so exciting to have the opportunity to help spread the word about autism by participating in this walk. I was fortunate enough during my previous walks to be one of the top individual fundraisers in Colorado, and I’d love to make T-man proud by doing it again this year.
Please consider helping out by making a contribution, joining me for the walk on May 6th, or visiting www.AutismSpeaks.org to see how you can get involved in your own area.
Thank you so very much for your consideration.
