Please Support Team Silverman in the 2019 Autism Speaks Walk
Last year, Team Silverman was one of the top fundraising teams for the Georgia Walk! With your help, we can do it again!
Our son Reese was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder in 2014. We know firsthand the unique challenges -- and joys -- that are a part of our lives as a result. Since 2015, I have served on the Board of Directors of the Autism Speaks Georgia Chapter and have been privileged to witness the amazing difference that Autism Speaks makes for families every day.
Autism Speaks is dedicated to promoting solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the lifespan, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families through advocacy and support; increasing understanding and acceptance of people with autism spectrum disorder; and advancing research into causes and better interventions for autism spectrum disorder and related conditions.
Autism Speaks enhances lives today and is accelerating a spectrum of solutions for tomorrow.
Your support makes a REAL difference for people living with autism, their families and communities. More than 85 cents of every dollar raised by Autsim Speaks goes directly to programs and services. Just a few local examples include
Direct Family Support: Our Autism Response Team responded to over 3000 calls and emails from individuals and families in GA. Our Community Outreach Manager hosted 10 Community Meetings across Georgia in which over 450 attendees received detailed information about the programs and services Autism Speaks provides. In addition we hosted Town Halls on the topics of Transition and Individualized Education Program (IEP) where over 400 attendees were able to receive content expertise and speak with local resource providers.
Local Funding: We funded over $45,000 in grants for amazing organizations and programs like the EXCEL Program at Georgia Tech (https://www.scheller.gatech.edu/centers-initiatives/ile/excel/index.html) and Erin's Hope for Friends (https://erinshopeforfriends.org). We funded an additional $250,000 to the Marcus Autism Center in 2018 alone. Since 2006 Autism Speaks has funded over $1.9 million in Science and Family Services Grants and over $2 million in funding to the Marcus Autism Center.
Impactful Legislative Change: Spearheading legislative advocacy efforts to expand insurance coverage for medical care for autism. Just a few years ago, Georgia was one of a handful of states with ZERO requirement on insurers to cover ABA therapy (which is scientifically proven to be effective in improving communication, social relationships, play, self care, school and employment for those on the autism spectrum). Because of the efforts of Autism Speaks, Georgia now requires both Medicaid and private insurance coverage of autism therapies. As users of ABA therapy, we can personally attest to the life-changing benefits it can provide.
Family Events: We hosted free or reduced cost sensory friendly events with the Atlanta Hawks, Chuck E Cheese's, Atlanta Braves, Georgia Aquarium, Atlanta Zoo, Georgia Symphony Orchestra, and many more throughout the year in which over 5,000 people attended.
The Walk: Over 12,000 people attended the Atlanta Autism Speaks Walk, our single largest fundraising event to fuel the mission of Autism Speaks
Thank you in advance for your support of Team Silverman, the Georgia Walk and Autism Speaks!
With gratitude and appreciation,
Jeremy, Marci, Reese and Mira
