Our 2019 story...
Some of you are familiar with the challenges Christian has had to over come since his diagnosis at 2 years old. Life can change so quickly on this journey. It’s scary, that especially in the teenage years, the landscape of challenges is so vast. In November of 2017, my sweet funny son, who had been doing so well was hospitalized for 4 months. It happened suddenly. It was the most devastating and difficult crisis either of us had ever had to go through. I am happy to say that we made it through with lots of faith, love and support from family, friends and amazing dedicated special needs professionals. Christian is in a different place today but still requires a significant amount of reassurance and encouragement on a daily basis. Learning to regulate his emotions is very difficult for him but he’s constantly making progress. He still struggles with extreme anxiety and other after-effects of such a traumatic experience but each day gets better. He so wants to please others and be happy but still doesn’t have the friendship of another child. He is happy and doesn’t think about this but as I get older I worry because the thought of him feeling lonely one day when I’m not here breaks my heart so I pray that with assistance from new programs, he discovers friendship this year.
Christian will always be my hero, his unbelievable strength and perseverance is something I have never seen from a 13 year old boy. I hope that by fundraising for the research, advocacy and family supports made possible by Autism Speaks, one day children like mine will not have to endure the trauma of hospitalization...that there will be more options and places for families to turn to for help.
I ask you to please join our team, fundraise and walk and fund raise with our team on October 13th at Jones Beach because Autism now affects EVERY family. If you aren't able to walk please donate...
From the bottom of my heart, your generosity and support is GREATLY appreciated.
With Much Love & Thanks,
Michele & Christian
I earned my Walk Tee Shirt!
