A Buccaneers' Tale
I'm walking to raise funds for the mission of Autism Speaks – to fuel innovative research and make connections to critical lifelong supports and services for the autism community. Please support me by donating and help me meet my fundraising goal - and you, too, can join our Troxel Buccaneers team and make an impact for people living with autism!
Can you imagine hearing the words "your child has autism"? In a split second, life - as you know it - has changed.
When Talon Turned 3 we noticed enormous quirks, rituals, gibberish, and an inability to communicate properly his wants and needs. Our child that had 500 words by age 2 was near nonverbal by age 3...using biting, grunting, and hitting as a means to communicate. Pieces of our hearts were dying with every odd tendency. Not to mention the year to two year wait in order to be seen by a neurodevelopmental pediatrician. We were devastated and didn't know where to find help. Brandon and I were crushed...
Two years later, just when we began to recognize our hearts from Talon's fall and exhaled... Caiden, our second son, changed at age 3; rituals and rage took over my little boy and soon thereafter was diagnosed with Aspergers and Oppositional Defiant Disorder!
Brandon and I no longer recognized our hearts...and together somehow we found strength to rebuild again, holding tighter, singing louder and loving each other with all our might!
Every day of every week our boys have some type of therapy...whether it is behavioral, social, speech, occupational, feeding or music therapy - Brandon and I pray for a cure so that we can enjoy days therapy-free.
Autism Speaks was a fantastic resource for us when we needed to learn, understand, and feel that we were not alone.
Strangers yet people united by a single cause and dedicated to raising money to find a cure and build awareness!! Thank you for taking an important step in the fight against autism. By participating in this event, you are helping to change the future for all who struggle with autism. By walking, you are getting us one step closer to finding what causes autism, how to prevent and treat it, and ultimately a cure so no family ever hears those words again.
Until then, we walk to find answers and raise awareness about the devastating toll that autism has had on families like ours. I need you to help make tomorrow be about music lessons, playdates and friendly conversations rather than therapy, doctor appointments, practicing skills in the community, and despair.
Many scholars have opined that the hallmark of a civilized society is how we take care of those who are unable to take care of themselves. Talon and Caiden cannot help that he has autism. My husband and I cannot help that our perfect little bundles have autism. We wish that they did not although we are blessed in many ways by the clarity that their disability has brought into our lives. We did not invite autism into our world, and wish that we did not have to rely on society to be benevolent, to do the right thing, and to think the right thing, but that’s the hand we’ve been dealt.
We might not find the cures for our children but at least we have Autism Speaks to support and walk our journey through Autism, Aspergers, Sensory Processing Disorder and Oppositional Defiant disorder. And Today we have YOU!
Thank you for taking an important step in the fight against autism.
