Support Funding for Home & Community-Based Services

Dear [Decision Maker],

Home and community-based services (HCBS) provide a wide array of supports - like day programs and residential services - that many autistic people and their families rely on throughout their lifespan. However, capacity issues, both prior to and during the pandemic, have made it difficult for autistic individuals and their families to access high-quality, individualized, community-based services, which threaten their ability to live meaningful lives in the community. Over the past decade, the number of people on HCBS waiting lists has more than doubled; and once on the wait list, it often takes many years before individuals actually are able to access services.

Absent additional funds, state Medicaid programs will not be able to meet the needs of families and autistic individuals who need support now more than ever, and autistic individuals will not receive this necessary care which can lead to improved health outcomes, increased longevity and enhanced quality of life.

To truly ensure that the infrastructure is in place to provide high quality HCBS for all autistic individuals and others with disabilities who require them, a significant investment, in line with the $400 billion proposed by President Biden in the American Jobs Plan and as proposed in Congress through the Better Care Better Jobs Act, is essential.

As your constituent, I ask that you contact leadership and House Energy and Commerce/Senate Finance leaders to let them know you support a significant investment in HCBS in upcoming infrastructure/reconciliation bills. Thank you in advance for your support!
