Mid-South Area Volunteer Application

 

The Autism Speaks Mid-South Area (States of AK,AL,GA,MS,NC,SC,TN) is currently seeking dedicated and passionate volunteers for multiple programs. From serving on event fundraising and planning committees for our walk, run, or gala to influential leaders garnering resources to further our mission by serving on our Executive Leadership Council. No matter your volunteer role, you'll work with an Autism Speaks staff partner to learn all you need to be successful.

Walk and/or Special Event Committees
The event planning committees work closely with local Autism Speaks staff partners to plan and execute events that raise critical funds for the mission of Autism Speaks. Fundraising isn’t just about collecting money; it also includes being able to effectively communicate the importance of fueling the mission of Autism Speaks. Average time commitment can range from 1-6 hours/month, depending on timing of event cycle.

Executive Leadership Council (ELC)*
The purpose of the Executive Leadership Council is to advance the mission and fundraising goals of Autism Speaks in Key Markets across the country. Aligned with the nationwide Autism Speaks business plan, the ELC offers members the opportunity to lead revenue-generating initiatives, as well as partner on priority programs and advocacy efforts.

Members are influential leaders in the community who possess diverse skill sets, experience, perspectives and have a strong commitment to the mission of Autism Speaks and the greater autism community. ELC members reflect the professional, geographic, and ethnic diversity of the market in which they serve. With this diversity as foundation, the ELC provides strategic counsel and support to ensure broad reach and success of local mission-delivery and fundraising efforts of Autism Speaks.

Young Professionals*
The purpose of the Autism Speaks Young Professionals is to advance the mission and fundraising goals of Autism Speaks in Key Markets across the country. Members are typically graduate students, business professionals, direct service providers, teachers, self-advocates and other professionals.

Young Professionals will work closely with Autism Speaks staff to align with the overall organization business plan. Members have the opportunity to lead revenue generating events as well as partner on mission integration goals and advocacy efforts. Emphasis is placed on professional networking and experience for career development.

*Note: Currently being developed in key markets as part of an organizational strategic plan. The structure, committees, member responsibilities, annual contribution commitment, and term limits may vary from market to market.

General Volunteer & Community Opportunities (as available)
Community Champion
  • Act as a representative of Autism Speaks in your local community by participating in outreach events with local organizations and businesses.

World Autism Month Champion
  • Plan and execute events and/or partnerships to increase understanding and acceptance of autism. This position requires emphasis and special focus for activation during the month of April.

Day-of Event Volunteer
  • Assist on event day with setup/clean up, registration/check-in and other responsibilities that will ensure a well-executed event.

Grant Reviewer
Volunteer Grant Reviewers are needed approximately 1-2 times a year to review proposals submitted for Local Impact Grants and/or Norma and Malcolm Baker Recreation Program grants. Each reviewer will review proposals through an online portal and have approximately one month to complete the reviews at their own pace.

Advocacy Ambassador Program
The Autism Speaks Advocacy Ambassador Program is a grassroots program designed to build relationships between constituents and legislators at the federal level. Advocacy Ambassadors help Autism Speaks meet advocacy goals by sharing their personal experiences and information on policies related to autism. Ambassadors are grassroots volunteers selected to serve as the main point of contact for their respective federal legislator(s). They work directly with local Autism Speaks staff and staff located in the Washington, D.C. offices to implement initiatives. This diverse group of advocates includes nearly 380 volunteers from 46 states and the District of Columbia. People with autism, family members, lawyers, behavioral analysts and more have joined this passionate community.
