This year, we are planning to participate in the Colorado Autism Speaks Field Day for all, to raise money for autism research.  

As many of you know, we walk because of our 30 year old son, Daniel Scherer, who was diagnosed with a form of autism, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder, when he was 4 years old.  Daniel and the family have faced challenges due to the many adjusted expectations and needs associated with this diagnosis.  It is very clear that information and training is helpful for individuals with the diagnosis as well as families and the community at large.  Individuals on and off the spectrum benefit from compassion and respect in order to reach their potential.  As a family affected by having a member diagnosed with autism, we see the need for support for families, but our focus is definitely on helping all individuals and families with autism.  Advocating for this also will help all members of society to understand and support each other.

As scientists, we are especially interested in the support provided by Autism Speaks for research into causes, complicating circumstances, and treatments for those affected by autism.  Autism Speaks supports research studies and gatherings of autism researchers.  Since individuals with autism can have many varied challenges and potential outcomes, research into co-occurring conditions as well as genetic testing to guide interventions is a promising area.  Empowerment of people with autism and their families with resources, coupled with advocacy for increased acceptance and understanding, are other important areas where Autism Speaks helps.
