Welcome to Allison Chin Smyth's Personal Page
Welcome, and thank you!
First of all, thank you for even taking the first step of making it to this page. Autism plays a special role in my family's life as at 18 months, my cousin, Jocelyn Chi, was diagnosed. For those of you unfamiliar with Autism and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), the disorder refers to a broad range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. According to the Centers for Disease Control, autism affects an estimated 1 in 54 children in the United States today.
Societal norms carry so many stigmas that it's common for parents of autistic children to avoid talking about it out of fear of rejection, judgement, and acceptance. Norms are like chameleons, they show up and we might not even know they exist. They play such a huge role in how we show up for communities that may differ from our own. We need to create more safe spaces. We need to talk more. We need to be advocates. We need to foster kindness. We need to create community. We need inclusivity. Let's be a part of the movement.
I'm raisings funds for the mission of Autism Speaks - enhancing lives today and accelerating a spectrum of solutions for tomorrow. I'm raising funds to support all the pieces needed to enable more advocacy, community, acceptance, and kindness. I'm raising funds in loving support of Jocelyn Chi and her family.
Please support me by donating and help me meet my fundraising goal - and you, too, can enhance lives today and accelerate a spectrum of solutions for tomorrow!
