In the past three years, two of my four children have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). What most people don't see is how deeply autism shapes our daily life - at home, at school, and in every moment in between. Our story isn't one we share often, but I'm choosing to share it now - with purpose.

Because awareness creates understanding.

And understanding leads to action. And action changes lives.

A Tale of Two Journeys

When one of my younger children was diagnosed with autism as a toddler, we immediately entered the world of evaluations, therapy appointments, sensory tools, and emotional coaching. Through early intervention, our family learned strategies to help support emotional regulation, communication, and daily coping skills. It hasn't been easy - but having access to resources has given this child the chance to thrive.

It also opened my eyes.

As I began learning more about ASD, I started recognizing familiar traits - traits I had seen for years in one of my older children. The intense routines. The sensory sensitivities. The emotional overwhelm. The social exhaustion after school. For years, these struggles were misunderstood by teachers, doctors, even family. Back then, autism often went undiagnosed - especially in people who learned how to "mask" in order to cope.

Two children.

Same diagnosis.

Two completely different journeys - because one had access to early screening and support, and one grew up without it.

I'm running the Disney Princess 10K on Saturday, February 28th as part of Team Zipperly-Doo-Dah - in honor of my children and all the families walking this journey alongside us. I'm raising funds for Autism Speaks because organizations like this help families access:

- Early screening and diagnosis

- Occupational, behavioral, and speech therapy resources

- Family support tools

- Advocacy and awareness efforts

- Research that leads to better services and lifelong support

Early intervention changed the future for my child - and I want every family to have that same chance.
