3 years ago, I'd never run more than a few miles consecutively and now next fall I'll be running my third marathon in Berlin, Germany. It's been quite a journey to get here and while I attribute most of my motivation to my amazing husband, family, and friends, I'd be remiss to not attribute a huge amount of my motivation to the causes I run for.
Finding motivation to hit the pavement on a balmy, humid Saturday morning is hard to come by but finding a cause to raise money for helps get me out of bed because I know that every step I take, I'm working towards fundraising for an amazing cause and it makes crossing the finish line that much sweeter. This race, I've chosen to run with and for Austism Speaks.
Autism, or autism spectrum disorder, refers to a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates 1 in 59 children is on the autism spectrum.
Autism Speaks is dedicated to promoting solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the lifespan, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families through advocacy and support; increasing understanding and acceptance of autism spectrum disorder; and advancing research into causes and better interventions for autism spectrum disorder and related conditions. They empower people with autism and their families with resources, online tools and information covering the life span. Autism Speaks enhances lives today and is accelerating a spectrum of solutions for tomorrow.
Thank you in advance for any support you can provide!
