It's never easy to hear tough news, especially when it's about your grandchild. Upon moving to Clarkfield last fall, Hannah was referred by her new doctor for speech therapy and occupational therapy. She's made improvements since October, but it was recommended that she be evaluated for autism spectrum disorder.
Hannah is just over two and a half years old and has yet to speak full sentences or even more than a couple words. She has no interest in playing with other kids, including her older sister Grace. She has a very repetitive way of playing that inhibits her from learning new forms of play. These behaviors are more than just Hannah being different from her sister or just more chill or independent.
About two weeks ago, she was officially diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and a developmental delay. However, we're extremely fortunate that her family has moved to an area of Minnesota that has an autism clinic nearby. The READY Clinic in Montevideo is exactly what she needs to get on track for school readiness by age 7. The waiting list is into 2022, so Jon and Katie are doing what they can in the meantime to get her whatever services are available in the area.
Hannah has a long way to go, and her diagnosis is hard to hear, but she is a huge blessing to our family and is a little ray of sunshine! Her smile and blue eyes bring so much joy to my heart! Jon and Katie are working on services through the school district and adding an extra speech therapy session each week. Hopefully something will change and she can get into the READY Clinic sooner than next year.
This is meant to inform friends and family and to ask for good vibes and prayers for our sweet Hannah. She's an incredible little girl, and we can't wait for the day when she can tell us with words how she feels and what she thinks. Please keep them in your thoughts as they venture forward
Thank you for supporting Autism Speaks. Any contributions are greatly appreciated.
