Autism Speaks is an organization that has deeply touched my life. When my daughter was two years old, I took her to the pediatrician for an annual check up and to discuss what I thought was just a speech delay. Fast forwarding through the next few months of evaluations and opinions, our daughter had received a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder. We will never forget that day. That doctor's visit. That pivotal moment in our lives. At that time, I was ashamed (even as a healthcare provider) of how little I actually knew about the road we were about to travel down. I wasn’t sure where or whom to turn to for accurate information. And then Autism Speaks entered the equation. 

In a relatively short amount of time, I was able to educate myself (and then some) on how to become a fierce advocate for my daughter. For those of you lucky enough to know her, Grace is a beautiful, soft spoken, deeply loving child. She has not only changed my life, but has changed the way I view the world and everyone within it. I am running this race for her, and the thousands of other children/families diagnosed each year with this challenging, complicated disorder. 

(and by the way…  I’ve never run more than 13.1 miles and I am somewhat terrified of doubling that mileage!)

Autism, or autism spectrum disorder, refers to a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates 1 in 54 children is on the autism spectrum.

Autism Speaks is dedicated to promoting solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the lifespan, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families through advocacy and support; increasing understanding and acceptance of autism spectrum disorder; and advancing research into causes and better interventions for autism spectrum disorder and related conditions. They empower people with autism and their families with resources, online tools and information covering the life span. 

Autism Speaks enhances lives today and is accelerating a spectrum of solutions for tomorrow.
