Join me in my efforts to support Autism Speaks!!
I have decided to participate in this year's NYRR United Half Marathon in support of a charity that provides solutions and resources to individuals and families who are impacted by Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Not only do I have an immediate family member who was diagnosed with Autism at a young age, but a close colleague and friend along with her beautiful son! I am planning to run in their honor; which will keep a smile on my face for the whole 13.1 miles :)
As a college student, I studied special education and found myself doing tons of research and volunteer work alongside children with disabilities. I immediately fell in love with their spirits and personalities. I went on to graduate with my B.A in Education, and landed myself my first job in a public school district supporting a resource room for elementary students with disabilities. However, I still felt there was more I could do. I ultimately found myself an employee at an Educational Technology company aptly named "Rethink Autism". Rethink Autism's mission was to provide easy-to-use tools for IEP (individualized education plan) and Behavior Plan tracking within school districts across the US. I loved working with these districts, supporting teachers in learning how to best support the children with Autism and meeting hundreds of these students along the way. Ever since, I have continued to work in Education via various roles while working as a volunteer on the side for various organizations.
When the opportunity came about to run on the Autism Speaks team, I couldn't help but says: ABSOLUTELY!!!!
Thank you in advance for your donation, every penny counts!
For more information about Autism, see below...
Autism, or autism spectrum disorder, refers to a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates 1 in 54 children is on the autism spectrum.
Autism Speaks is dedicated to promoting solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the lifespan, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families through advocacy and support; increasing understanding and acceptance of autism spectrum disorder; and advancing research into causes and better interventions for autism spectrum disorder and related conditions. They empower people with autism and their families with resources, online tools and information covering the life span.
Autism Speaks enhances lives today and is accelerating a spectrum of solutions for tomorrow.
Thank you for helping me reach my goal. Your support is greatly appreciated!
