WALT DISNEY WORLD Marathon Weekend presented by State Farm
Team Running to See the Magic
Friends and Family,
Tucker and I are raising funds to support a cause that is important to our family while helping Tucker accomplish a personal goal. We are raising funds in exchange for race bibs in the Walt Disney World Marathon Weekend 5K race. This will be my fourth season running with Autism Speaks. This will also be Tucker’s first official RunDisney 5K. We have completed a handful of virtual races together since he was born in 2018 and in 2019 he participated in the Diaper Dash. We will be running as an Athlete with Disability Duo, which allows him to run or walk as much as he likes but also gives him the option of being pushed in the running stroller. He is incredibly excited to finally earn his own “big fancy medal.” He has grown up watching me run races and has finished a handful of 5K’s with me since I was pregnant with him. He was devastated this past race year because he missed the age cutoff by ten days. I am incredibly excited to be able to help him accomplish this goal and cannot wait to see the joy and excitement that RunDisney will bring him!
Autism, or autism spectrum disorder, refers to a range of conditions characterized by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication.
Tucker was diagnosed at age two. He was nonverbal and had a difficult time socializing with kids his age and had many sensory aversions. Over the past three years we have worked super hard with speech therapy, occupational therapy and developmental therapy. He has made huge progress over this past year with graduating from speech therapy, occupational therapy and his pre-kindergarten speech and language class. He will be starting kindergarten in the fall at the school by our house. He has a wonderful support system in his family, therapists, friends and coaches to allow him to thrive like other five year olds. In December of 2022 he started swim lessons and has learned to trust new people while facing many fears.
Autism Speaks is dedicated to promoting solutions, across the spectrum and throughout the lifespan, for the needs of individuals with autism and their families through advocacy and support; increasing understanding and acceptance of autism spectrum disorder; and advancing research into causes and better interventions for autism spectrum disorder and related conditions. They empower people with autism and their families with resources, online tools and information covering the life span.
Thank you for helping us reach our goal. Your support is greatly appreciated!
