“If you’ve met one person with autism, you’ve met one person with autism.”
Autism is a developmental disability caused by differences in brain development that affect social communication, interaction, and behavior. Its presentation varies widely. Some children show signs within the first year of life, while others may not exhibit characteristics until 24 months or later. Early identification and intervention are proven to significantly improve long-term outcomes.
James was diagnosed with Level 1 Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) at approximately two years old. Early signs included delayed speech limited to two-word phrases, heightened sensitivity to changes in routine, and difficulty with age-appropriate play. He often lined up toys for extended periods and became extremely distressed when plans changed.
After his diagnosis, James began speech therapy, which greatly improved his communication skills. With appropriate accommodations, he keeps pace academically with his peers.
In 2024, following the loss of his father, James experienced some regression. Autism frequently co-occurs with other physical and mental health conditions, including ADHD, anxiety, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder - less commonly bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. Navigating autism alongside additional diagnoses can intensify emotional challenges and make self-regulation more difficult.
Despite these obstacles, James continues to demonstrate resilience. He will turn 17 in June and is on track to graduate high school next year with his class. As we prepare for this transition, I have leaned heavily on the resources provided by Autism Speaks. Parenting a child with special needs can feel overwhelming, and having reliable information and guidance all in one place has been invaluable. From research on medications and therapy options, to developmental checklists, to directories for specialists who work specifically with autistic children, the support has made a meaningful difference for our family.
After a brief pause, we have renewed our efforts and are moving forward with strengthened commitment. Please consider supporting this important cause—not only in honor of James, but for the many families navigating an autism diagnosis.
