We are so excited to participate in our first 5K run/walk as a family. This event means so much to us because we are running not only for a cause, but for someone very close to our hearts—our son, Damien—and for so many other families walking a similar journey.
When Damien was about 20 months old, we began to notice changes in our once chatty, outgoing little boy. The words he used to say started to fade, and the small moments of connection we cherished seemed to slip away. As parents, something deep inside told us that something wasn’t right. Hoping to ease our worries, we decided to have him evaluated.
The day we received his autism diagnosis was one of the hardest days for us. We felt heartbroken, scared, and completely overwhelmed. Our minds were filled with questions about his future and how we could best support him. We didn’t know where to begin or what the next steps would be.
In the middle of that uncertainty, we found the Autism Speaks website. Through their resources, we began learning about autism, understanding Damien’s world, and discovering tools that helped guide us forward. During one of the most difficult times in our lives, those resources gave us knowledge, hope, and direction.
Today, we are incredibly proud to be participating in this fundraising 5K run/walk. We are walking for Damien, for families who are just beginning this journey, and for greater awareness, understanding, and support for the autism community.
If you feel moved to do so, we would be so grateful if you joined our team or considered making a donation. Every step we take and every contribution helps bring more awareness, resources, and hope to families like ours.
Thank you for supporting Damien and so many others like him.
