You were born already battling adversity after 30 hours of labor, we lost Maximus’s heartbeat. I was screaming through tears, “Why isn’t the doctor here? Why is she still in that bed? Somebody get him out!” One nurse looked at another and whispered, “He’s right, the doctor needs to get this baby out now.”
Finally, after a few more agonizing hours, the doctor arrived and they rushed Mommy in for an emergency C-section.
August 18th 2018 we heard it: his cry. Time slowed as he locked eyes with me, We rolled to Mommy while they stitched her up and I just kept sobbing, “Look at him… you did it… he’s perfect. I’m so proud of you.”
Maximus walked at 9 months, read before 3, crushed every milestone. We thought “genius.” Then came the word: autism. The world stopped. People said he’d “never leave home,” and it crushed us, until we realized he’s the blessing. His brutal honesty, his huge heart, the way he taught his brother to share and me how to love deeper than I ever dreamed, those are the real miracles.
Some still hand us pity. We hand it right back with gratitude. God chose us for him because He knew we’d never stop celebrating every perfect piece of our boy. He knew Max was a fighter and that he wouldn’t master this fight as long as he was born into love.
