Walk Goal $2,000

Help us reach our goal!

In addition to coming together in person to help create a world where all people with autism can reach their full potential, each Walk will retain the fun, remote-participation options introduced last year. Your safety is our priority — and no matter how you choose to participate, your support will be recognized and celebrated. Our community is stronger together, and we can't wait to celebrate one another and the amazing impact we are making together for people with autism and their families. Whether near or far, let's rally together on Walk day!

Dreaming with Daniel

On September 25 (Daniel’s birthday) we are planning to walk in the annual Colorado Walk for Autism Speaks, at Infinity Park in Glendale, to raise money for autism research.  As we are starting to get into more normal routines, it is a challenge to get back to doing more, and many things are still up in the air.  Mark, Daniel, and Cindy were finally able to go on a long-delayed trip to Europe to see the passion play in Oberammergau (originally planned for June 2020).  It was a great opportunity, but strange to be travelling again.

Autism refers to multiple disorders associated with “challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviors, speech and nonverbal communication.”  Currently, 1/54 children are diagnosed with some subtype of autism, and many have complications with sensory and medical issues such as gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, seizures or sleep disorders, as well as mental health challenges such as anxiety, depression and attention issues” (Autism Speaks website).  Cases of autism continue to go up globally, with a new study estimating that about 1/100 children around the world are diagnosed.

As scientists, we are especially interested in the support provided by Autism Speaks for research into causes, complicating circumstances, and treatments for this disorder.  Autism Speaks supports research studies and gatherings of autism researchers.  Since individuals with autism can have many varied challenges and potential outcomes, research into co-occurring conditions as well as genetic testing to guide interventions is a promising area.  Testing of a proposed ‘model of care’ should guide service providers to give important support.  As understanding is improved, we hope that individuals affected by autism and their families will have increased success and be able to increase their contribution to society.
