My son, Prince Charming is 17 years old. He is a sweetheart with big brown eyes. He loves video games, his friends, and super heroes. Looking at Prince Charming, you wouldn’t know that he has a debilitating disorder known as autism. Autism affects every aspect of Prince Charming’s life…and the lives of everyone around him. Prince Charming has come a very long way since his diagnosis in September of 2009. Since then, he has learned to speak, to read, to hold a conversation with some help.
In school, Prince Charming is well above where he should be academically with an IQ above 70. But for all of his intelligence, Prince Charming is still struggling with his reading and can barely write words. He cannot interact appropriately with others. He has trouble processing the world around him. He has many sensory issues that prevent him from enjoying the things that we all take for granted. It’s hard enough to focus on our daily lives, much less imagine what the future holds for him; and for me as his mother.
While this is a terribly exciting time, it’s also frustrating because we know that boys are 4 times more likely to be autistic than girls, and siblings of an autistic child are 3-5 times more likely to be afflicted. The statistics are terrifying.
I created a business in honor of my son, who is highly functioning autistic. For him to be highly functioning autistic means that he is in between. For me, I would have to fight for help and services much harder. The business, Prince Charming’s Circle of Friends, is about Prince Charming, his friends and family, and the people around him. It is all about our day and the things we face in the world of autism together.
So please do join Prince Charming's Circle of Friends
