Everyone knows someone impacted by autism. For me, that person is my big brother Drew. Drew is 29 years old living in his own house with an incredible staff, and though his life has been anything but easy, he is the most brave, strong, and resilient person that I know.

25 years ago, my parents were delivered the news that would change the trajectory of my family forever- Drew was diagnosed with autism. Upon receiving an autism diagnosis, families are faced with a plethora of questions that can feel impossible to answer. What people don?t always realize is that those questions don?t just exist in that moment, they follow your loved one for the rest of their life. These moments for families who deal with autism are incredibly scary and confusing. Autism Speaks is a beacon of hope for families like mine throughout their entire journey.

From as young as I can remember, Autism Speaks has been an integral component to helping Drew navigate through life. They have given us access to the appropriate care, educated us about new medical technologies, and most importantly, provided a network of support filled with other families who remind us that we are not alone. Autism is complicated, and depends on science funding to discover research breakthroughs that can improve the lives of autistic people. Autism Speaks is dedicated to giving a voice to the voiceless, and never giving up, no matter how hard this fight can be.

Autism is a challenge, but it does not destroy families. Drew has enriched my life and made me the person I am today.
