Hi! I’m Amelia, I have nonverbal high functioning autism.
The reason I have chosen to participate in this year’s Walk for Autism is to spread awareness and support others along the way. This means so much to me, as I am able to advocate and let others know that we are capable of ANYTHING and EVERYTHING. Autism Speaks is an incredible organization that I appreciate immensely- as it helps/benefits folks like myself!
Over 20 years ago, I was diagnosed with autism - which is also known as ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder). It is part of me and I have learned to accept it. To me, Autism is NOT a disability. In no way am I terrified of my diagnosis. I choose to include and accept! Autism has NO boundaries, ZERO limitations, and should NOT be a label! One of the phrases that I truly believe in is “Please do not judge what you may not understand”. I learn at a different pace, have a hard time reading facial expressions, and not understand your body language. For me, being left out and talked down on are triggers (things that cause anxiety). I have sensory issues - loud noises, huge crowds, others in my personal space, being overwhelmed, and changes.
Individuals with autism have feelings and emotions, just like everyone else. Please do not feel afraid to interact with folks like me.
This year, I'm walking to raise funds for the mission of Autism Speaks - to fuel innovative research and make connections to critical lifelong supports and services for the autism community. Please considering supporting me by donating and help me meet my fundraising goal or by spreading the word. Joining my team or walking at this event is completely optional. Having awareness about autism, being inclusive and accepting has an impact for people living on the spectrum. Thank you so much!
