Today, over 70 million children and adults are affected by autism. Each of them, have unique strengths, challenges and potential. Autism Speaks will be there for them. You and I can be too.
Here is Mr. C’s story.
Mr. C is 5 years old. We had an idea and an educational diagnosis of autism and apraxia around the age of 2.5 when finishing up birth to 3 and medical diagnosis following around 4. We are currently awaiting to see where he falls on the spectrum with a developmental pediatrician.
Mr. C is a bright, happy, little boy who loves to laugh, dance, watch jack hartmann and bounce patrol. He is hyperlexic and loves shapes, numbers, letters, colors, and the solar system! We like to cook in his play kitchen, walk, hike, run, swing, jump, swim, and eat his favorite veggie sticks and gold fish!
Currently, he is using a Wego speech device with TouchChat system provided by Talk to Me Technologies, recommended through our SPT at Cheshire Fitness Zone. We also use a small amount of ASL as we are all learning this together as he grows.
We think that Mr. C will talk one day, but until then we want to help inspires others to use and be educated with AAC communication. “nonverbal doesn’t mean speechless!”
It’s only through the dedicated support of people like us that Autism Speaks can continue their vital mission work. Each year, the Autism Speaks Autism Response Team makes direct contact with tens of thousands of individuals looking for advice or guidance and more than one million people access their free nationwide autism services and resources. They continue to partner and support research to improve the lives of people with autism by investing in science that will allow more personalized treatments and therapies. You can find out even more about where your fundraising dollars go at autismspeaks.org/our-work.
