Today, over 70 million children and adults are affected by autism. As of 2026, 1 in 36 children will be diagnosed on the spectrum. This many of which who don't even though each of them, have unique strengths, challenges and potential. Autism Speaks will be there for them. You and I can be too.
On September 11, 2013, I became a mother to a child with Autism. My first born. My first experience at motherhood and my first time navigating through a journey I felt unequipped to handle. For many years I questioned my ability to be a special needs parent....was I too hard on my son? Did I give him enough grace today? Did I allow him a safe space to express his feelings? Should I have disciplined him for that? Did I remember to tell him to say his prayers at night? All of these thoughts haunted me day after day and night after night. I questioned God so many times....I didn't have the experience, I didn't have the knowledge and I surely didn't have the patience....I felt set up....I felt like God didn't give me the tools to help my son along this journey through life.....
Until one day, it all made sense....Nehemiah, you have been the divine purpose for my life. Who God called you to be has taught me so much about myself and the kindness I strive to show others. You've taught me patience, kindness, gentleness, peace, faithfulness, love, self-control, goodness, and joy. Your very being in who you are embody the fruits of the spirit. When I am impatient, you teach me to slow down as there is no rush to life or its enjoyment....you show me kindness when you asked me to buy a donut for your teacher whose donut was stolen by another student....and Nehemiah, you show me love and joy! The unwavering love you've shown me, even when I was faulty in my parenting, even when I had given up on myself...you gave me a joy on earth, I pray I see in heaven.
The world needs more of you! Your funny jokes, your silly ways, your intelligence and your genuine love for people and animals. It is truly unmatched. You have grown to become a wonderful young man and I am proud of you in so many ways. You were specially hand picked and given to me to show the world His love outside of heaven. I am eternally grateful to God that He chose me!
So today, I ask you to join me in supporting Nehemiah and those like him by donating to help me reach my fundraising goal. Together, we have the power to enhance the lives of people with autism and make a meaningful difference. Thanks so much for your support!
