Sarchyme’s Story,
My personal journey into the world of Autism began just over 5 years ago with the birth of my beautiful daughter, Chy. Initially, there were no immediate signs. She was a typical baby girl, meeting every milestone with each passing month. However, around 10 or 11 months, I noticed she wasn’t responding to her name when called, and loud noises didn’t startle her. Concerned, I had her hearing tested, which came back fine.
As time went on, I noticed more differences. Chy began losing words until she became nonverbal. I found myself constantly researching Autism Spectrum Disorder, feeling helpless and lost, not fully grasping what it meant or how to help her. Despite suggestions to wait and see, I immersed myself in learning about Autism, experiencing a mix of sadness and determination to support my daughter.
By age 3, with Chy still nonverbal and behind in many areas, I sought help from a Pediatric Neurologist. While waiting for an official diagnosis, I was advised to start speech therapy immediately. Unable to access therapy in the Bahamas, I made the difficult decision to send her to the US to live with a family friend for the necessary care. It was one of the hardest decisions of my life, but I knew her future depended on it.
This journey has been incredibly challenging yet rewarding. We celebrate every small milestone, cherishing moments like her first words, singing, calling me “mommy” at age 4, using the potty, smiling, pointing, and learning to swim. While other children engage in extracurricular activities, Chy’s life revolves around therapies. Few understand the depth of support she needs.
