Walking for Max, Walking for Every Voice
My son, Max, is six years old. While he’s non-verbal, he communicates in ways that go far beyond words—through his laughter, his hand gestures, and his routines.
Being an autism parent has reshaped the way I see the world. It’s taught me to celebrate small victories, to find joy in the unexpected, and to advocate fiercely—not just for Max, but for every family navigating this journey.
When we first received Max’s autism diagnosis in 2021, we felt a mix of emotions: uncertainty, relief, fear, grief, and a deep desire to understand. Our journey with autism hasn’t always been easy, but it’s been filled with moments of wonder, resilience, and deep love. We’ve learned to see beyond milestones and instead focus on these moments.
Max experiences the world in his own unique way, and we’ve learned to see beauty in that difference. Max reminds us daily that communication isn’t just about speech –it’s about connection.
Autism Speaks helps fund research, advocacy, and programs that make a real difference for families like ours. Your support means more than you know –it helps build a world where Max and kids like him can thrive.
That’s why my family is walking in the St. Louis Empower Walk & 5K Run for Autism Speaks on November 2nd. We walk for Max and for every child whose voice may sound different but is no less powerful. We are walking for awareness, for inclusion, and for a future where every child is seen, supported, and celebrated. And we’d love for YOU to be a part of it!
